There’s a reason 21 Toyota vehicles were named “Top Safety Picks” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2013. When it comes to you and the lives of others the most important feature in a vehicle is safety. Toyota has designed vehicles with this in mind. We all do our best to avoid accidents. But when the worst does happen, Toyota’s are designed to help protect people from harm. That includes drivers, passengers and even pedestrians.

So what makes a Toyota so safe?  These active safety features are built into each and every Toyota:

Star Safety System

The Star Safety System

The Star Safety System consist of Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Smart Stop Technology® (SST), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

Traction ControlTraction Control (TRAC)
TRAC can tell if a drive wheel is turning faster than the wheel on the opposite side, which can indicate a loss of traction. When TRAC detects slippage, the system can automatically reduce engine power until the wheel that is slipping slows and regains traction. If reducing engine power isn’t enough, the braking system will slow that wheel by pulsing the brake of that wheel.

Anti-lock brake systemAnti-lock Brake System (ABS)
When the brakes are applied, and a wheel (or wheels) begins to decelerate faster than the others, the system can recognize that it’s losing traction or locked up. In response, the system pulses the brake at that wheel until it begins to roll at the same speed as the others.

Brake Assist (BA)
Brake Assist is designed to detect sudden, or “panic,” braking, and assist the driver in stopping the vehicle, adding additional brake pressure if Brake Assist senses that the driver is braking too lightly.

Smart Stop Technology® (SST)
Smart Stop Technology is designed to automatically reduce engine power when both the brake and accelerator pedals are pressed at the same time under certain conditions.

Vehicle Stability controlVehicle Stability Control (VSC)
If the vehicle is deviating from the direction in which the driver is steering, VSC is designed to reduce engine power  and pulse the left- or right-side brakes to help correct the situation.

Side Impact Airbags
Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Side Airbags

The SRS Side Airbags work with a sensor stored in the center of your vehicle, which monitors for an impact exceeding a certain magnitude at the time of collision. In a collision, the side airbags are deployed at different times (within milliseconds) to reduce the impact that the head and chest can receive when colliding with a door or other objects outside the vehicle.

Whiplash Injury Lessening SeatWhiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) Seat

Whiplash is a common neck injury that can occur when the forces of a rear-end collision cause the head and torso to move relative to one another. This Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) Seat allows the seat back and headrest to simultaneously restrain your head and torso during an impact.

There are many more additional safety features that could also be included in your new Toyota, including the Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam, and the Backup Camera.
